I’ve been following Marshall’s fascination with the hubris of James Dobson, especially on a tirade against Leahy in an exchange with George Stephanopoulos. When Stephanopoulos had the audacity to ask Dobson if Dobson’s statement, “”Patrick Leahy is a God’s people hater,” is a particularly Christian thing to say, Dobson said, “Do you think you ought to lecture me on what a Christian is all about?”
It took batty Maureen Dowd to point out that George Stephanopoulos’ father is Father Robert G. Stephanopoulos, and has a resume a mile long. George didn’t breathe a word about this. Dobson, who the hell are you? Where are your Christian credentials? Charlatan…
I despise the self-righteousness of certain evangelicals very, very deeply.
You’ve hit on one of my pet peeves… the evangelical notion of surety. They “know” that they are saved and that they have a monopoly on Truth (with the capital T). It would be an odd footnote if it weren’t so deeply ingrained into the evangelical consciousness. It is drilled into them via short-sighted biblical proof-texting with nary a nod to context, meaning, or humility, and it serves to reduce religion to what amounts to an ethical system that presents itself as the opposite of an ethical system.

You know, those “Christians” are a bunch of fucking bastards who make me want to tear my hair out. I’m a Christian and I can’t stand the fact that these people are trying–and suceeding–to hijack the Church. When they come into the store and want to see the “Christian” books, they are the rudest fucking people I’ve ever had the unfortunate pleasure to meet. THAT’s not a Christian way to act, motherfuckers. I don’t think Jesus was a dickhead so why are you being one? That’s what I want to ask them…
