One funny, Swinging film as see below.  Tom, Julie, John Schlesinger, and even Keith Waterhouse would each go on to greater glories—The first two then got plum roles in Doctor Zhivago.  In 2004  Total Film named Billy Liar the 12th in their list of the greatest British Films of all time.  Oh, about Tom Courtenay—he played Andy Capp in the West End, and a few years back received a knighthood.
