The other day i was trying to track down some Julian Cope b-sides and rarities that i don’t have anymore. “Rail On” was the one that i was seeking, but i wound up with a bunch of Jehovahkill b-sides that i bought from eBay when i first got on the internet… stuff scattered on discs back in Husser. It gave me great joy to hear Cope barreling through “Gogmagog” again…
When i downloaded a folder called Christ Versus Warhol from someone recently, i wasn’t paying much attention to what was in it. It seemed like it would be live Teardrop Explodes…. oh, no no no. It is allegedly solo Julian demos from 1983, plus some stuff that sounds like it’s really from Skellington, which is the real clue.
This alternate version of “Kolly Kibber’s Birthday” is a lot more elaborate, with guitar and keyboards squibbles, and and a much fuller bottom end. In fact, i doubt if this is from 1983 at all. It sounds like a much later incarnation of the song.
I don’t think the Head Heritage Merchandiser is right. This stuff feels like it was probably recorded around 1989.
