Kings of the cut out bin! That’s really what they were… Some might say, that’s really all they were. . . But that works for me because I was the original cut out kid! Yea, that’s right… Watch me walk… Ok, I’m embarrassed now, I’ll stop…
Hey, check out this band. The LIVERPOOL EXPRESS!
Have you heard of them? I remember when I first found them, I couldn’t wait to share them with my friends. Well, select friends…The same friends who were digging on all the great Raspberries & Badfinger lp’s we’d found sealed for 50 cents in the TG&Y! Those are the friends I speak of! Yes! ….well, no.
You see, I apparently hear something in this band that certain cool people in the underground don’t hear. I learned this early. I played it to my friends Chris & Troy. Their heads cocked to the side, they looked at each other funny, then they asked me if they could just skim the LP. Chris grabbed the arm and quickly hopped through the tracks. Troy sat at the foot of my bed flipping through an old Trouser Press magazine. I was waiting for a reaction! All I got was Troy saying “Ooo look! An interview with Ian Hunter!â€.
Well, I had one friend that I knew would get it. He was the ultimate Badfinger fan. In fact, he was such a fan of the album ASS by Badfinger, that he simply referred to a good record by saying “That’s Assâ€. I hooked up with him & said “Wade, I just found a great band, they have a real Badfinger sound on a few tracks!†He looked at the LP cover & asked me the question…â€Is it Ass?†“I would say, “It’s Ass, some of it†I replied.
We put the LP on. We started with the track “Hold Tightâ€. He studied the LP cover. He periodically nodded his head with approval. Then I skipped over to Julian The Hooligan. He didn’t really take to it. He then manned the turn table & began the dreaded skimming of tracks!
He then took it off & delivered his analysis.. “It’s alright, but… It’s not Ass.†Then he added, “They sound more bubblegum fluff to me, Like Pilot or that kind of shit.†“Yea, I guess I can hear that†I replied. But what I was thinking was “What’s wrong with Pilot?!!!â€
Well, It’s been years but, here we go again. Here are four tracks by The Liverpool Express. Are they fluff at times? Yes. Do they sound like Badfinger or 70′s Beatles wanna be’s? Yes! But let me add, I wanted them to be fluff 70′s candy pop. I wanted them to sound like Pilot. That’s what I wanted! I mean, I didn’t want it to the extreme like, let’s say.. I dunno… JIGSAW! But I wanted a little fluff.
Check out these tracks:
HOLD TIGHT: This sounds so much like a Joey Molland Badfinger song that I have but one word to say about it…. ASS! Yep!
SO HERE WE GO AGAIN: No we get into the McCartney feel side of this band. It lifts a few notes & hooks from McCartney’s “Another Dayâ€. And it sounds like it could be a Denny Laine song from a Wings LP. But that’s fair because this is mid 70′s & The Liverpool Express are from the same home town as the fabs. In fact, one of the “lads†in this band was in a band that did shows with the Beatles back in the early 60′s. Remember a band called “The Merseybeats†?
TAKE IT EASY WITH MY HEART: Wow! Does this sounds like a Lennon out-take or am I just fucked up? What’s so odd, it sounds like an out take from “Double Fantasy†but, this came out before Double Fantasy! But, It also has a “Walls & Bridges†sound as well. Still, that tinkering & chirping sound & those “I’m fucking Yoko†moans at the intro, reminds me of Lennon on “Clean Up Timeâ€. It should be noted, Tommy Boyce of Boyce & Hart, produced this track! More Trivia: The artwork for the LEX LP features a model, Jerry Hall, who went on to marry Rolling Stoner, Mick Jagger.
IT’S A BEAUTIFUL DAY: Catchy little harmless acoustic 70′s pop song. Now, be nice to it, it means you no harm. It just wants to get stuck in your head for.. …FOREVER! And if you’re reading this Wade… This track may not be ASS, but it’s at least …“Straight Upâ€?
